One of Lilly Pulitzer's first business forays was opening a fresh fruit juice stand in Palm Beach, Florida in the 1950's. The colorful splashes of fruit juice that covered her dresses by the end of the day, quickly became the inspiration for her eye catching patterns that evolved into her fashion empire. When the picture of Lilly's college classmate, First Lady Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy wearing a Lilly dress on the cover of Life Magazine hit the newsstands in the 1960's, the Lilly Pulitzer fashion empire took off.
